The Overly USED Family Room
When Steve and I first bought this house, we were so excited because we had so much room for everyone to be able to spread out and have their own space, especially since our kids are different ages. (1 Elementary, 1 Middle, and 1 High School). We thought to ourselves, "Okay, since there is a playroom, a basement, a movie room, etc. we won't have to hear the kids fight over things and get a little peace and quiet" Hahahaha! That's funny. To no surprise, everyone seems to still end up in the family room, on top of each other, fighting and yelling and believe it or not, we wouldn't have it any other way. I mean don't get me wrong, sometimes it's SO annoying and I think I'm going to pull my weave out but then we realized..."Holy Sh**, we have one leaving in a year, the middle child thinks we're less cool by the day, and our youngest is a boy so he's really going to stop talking to me soon. So...we have started to enjoy and embrace the chaos, the food wrappers everywhere and the stains on the couch and I have learned the art of looking like our house isn't gross with kid grime all over it. (Just keeping it real, I swear.)
One thing I wanted to achieve when I started decorating this house was to give it a relaxed feel. Still be nice, elegant and formal but also have a laid back feel since that is a true representation of who we are. I get bored easily so I am always trying to switch things up but this is where we are at right now with our family room. I will probably start to dip into some more textures and materials soon but for the most part I'm kind of neutral with colors right now. I also like to mix different style of decorating into a room as I have a few family heirlooms sprinkled throughout the house. One of the best words of wisdom I had ever received when I started was "Anything can go, you can mix all sorts of different styles. Just make sure they are all speaking to each other and not screaming at each other." I loved that and it really stuck with me. I wouldn't say this room is my favorite "styling" wise but I think for a room that is used so much by my Hot Mess of a family...it turned out pretty well. It may not be the exact same in a few months but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. For now....I have linked below many of the items so you can buy them for yourself. You will see good decorating doesn't always have to cost an arm and a leg. It's just trying to get to know yourself and getting creative with a space.
A lot of the smaller decorative pieces I have purchased either online or a small store where they are no longer available but I am still looking so I will link them on here if I find them. Also, if you have any questions about anything in this room, don't hesitate to ask. I'm always here!
